Game theory is the study of mathematical models of strategic interactions among rational agents. It has applications in many fields of social science, used extensively in economics as well as in logic, systems science and computer science. Traditional game theory addressed two-person zero-sum games, in which a participant's gains or losses are exactly balanced by the losses and gains of the other participant. In the 21st century, game theory applies to a wider range of behavioral relations, and it is now an umbrella term for the science of rational decision making in humans, animals, as well as computers.

खेल सिद्धांत या गेम थ्योरी व्यवहारिक गणित की एक शाखा है जिसका प्रयोग समाज विज्ञान, अर्थशास्त्र, जीव विज्ञान, इंजीनियरिंग, राजनीति विज्ञान, अंतर्राष्ट्रीय संबंध, कम्प्यूटर साइंस और दर्शन में किया जाता है। खेल सिद्धांत कूटनीतिक परिस्थितियों में व्यवहार को बूझने का प्रयास करता है। यूँ तो शुरू में इसे उन प्रतियोगिताओं को समझने के लिए विकसित किया गया था जिनमें एक व्यक्ति का दूसरे की गलतियों से फायदा होता है, लेकिन इसका विस्तार ऐसी कई परिस्थितियों के लिए करा गया है जहाँ अलग-अलग क्रियाओं का एक-दूसरे पर असर पड़ता हो। आज, "गेम थ्योरी" समाज विज्ञान के तार्किक पक्ष के लिए एक छतरी या 'यूनीफाइड फील्ड' थ्योरी की तरह है जिसमें 'सामाजिक' की व्याख्या मानव के साथ-साथ दूसरे खिलाड़ियों को सम्मिलित कर की जाती है।(Aumann 1987)
